Terracina - tourist guide

Terracina is a resort in the central region of Italy, Lazio, on the Tyrrhenian Sea, the main city of the Odyssey coast (Riviera di Ulisse). For its inextricable connection with the history of Italy, the place is called "land of myths" - A lot of what is described in the Bible, historical chronicles, ancient legends, happened here.

Terracina is a combination of mild climate and clean beaches, developed infrastructure and excellent service, convenient location near Rome and Naples and a rich excursion program.

Story

The city of Terracina, the heart of the Tyrrhenian coast, the center of the Latin province of the Lazio region, was founded by representatives of ancient Aryan tribes who lived in Italy in time immemorial. Immigrants from Sparta, attracted by fertile soils, favorable weather of Terracina and safety for life (the surrounding mountains protected from enemies) began to arrive here in the IX-VIII centuries BC. e., a century and a half before Rome was founded.

The place was attracted not only by the natives of Sparta - at different times it was owned by the Etruscans, who gave it the name Terracine, the Witches, who renamed the city to Anxur and made the city the most powerful coastal fortress, and from 406 BC the Romans. For nearly 8 centuries, Terracina flourished and became the second port in Lazio, but then Roman power weakened, and the city, suffering from raids by barbarians and Saracens, fell into decay and began to revive again in the 5th-6th centuries A.D.

He was so prettier that in the 13th century he began to enjoy the favor of the popes and was elected by them as a summer residence, and Pope Urban II, known for the first campaign from Italy to the Holy Land, was elected in the Cathedral. The sights of the city remind of all these events.

Sights

The sights of Terracina begin with the Old Appian Way (Via Appia) between Rome and Naples, built in Italy 2600 years ago. It passes directly through the main square (Piazza del Municipio) and leads to the sea, dividing the city into Upper, Historic, and Lower. Local attractions are located right on the square: Roman Theater, Capitolium, Emilian Forum.

Among the ruins is an old church in honor of St. Cesario (San Cesareo), the patron saint of the city (commemorated on the first Monday after November 5), where Zeus statue - a copy from the Greek original of the II-III centuryand not far away stands the Tower of Roses (Torre dei Rosa).

The entrance to the Upper City from Naples is reliably protected by the Neapolitan Gate, built by the Emperor Troyan. The local attractions are stone walls, towers and fortresses, medieval buildings.

The best restaurant of the city "Trioni" is located on the main square in an old Roman house, which has preserved the remains of mosaics on the floor, parts of capitals, columns. Mosaic of the 5th century is also represented in the Cathedral.

Temple of jupiter

The Temple of Jupiter (Tempio di Giove), erected on Mount Sant'Angelo (Sant Angelo) at an altitude of 227 meters is the main attraction of the city of Terracina.

According to legend, it was Lazio who became the refuge for the formidable god when he fled from the wrath of his father. Therefore, the temple, created by the Etruscans in the 4th century BC, was later rebuilt by the Romans and dedicated to Jupiter. The remains of two huge temples have been preserved. One of them, "small", consisted of nine rooms with mosaic-decorated floors..

In front of those who dared to climb the top of the mountain in fine weather, a unique view opens up on Terracina and the Odyssey coast. In the evening, the temple is highlighted.

Appieva road

The Appian Way (Via Appia) - the "queen of the roads" of Italy - starts right from the Porta Capena in Rome and is named for Appia Claudia, who laid it from Rome towards Capua in the 4th century. BC uh ... Subsequently, it was extended, and it became possible to get to Naples, and in Terracina in the 1st century A.D. Emperor Trajan brought her to the sea, letting her right through the mountain.

540 km long road well preserved, and in the very center of Terracina you can feel stones under your feet, first laid two and a half millennia ago. They remember not only the Roman soldiers and carts of merchants, but also the apostle Peter, who, having been rewarded with the vision of Christ, returned to Rome through it, so that between the years 64 and 67 A.D. to be crucified upside down on the cross.
