The best beaches of Sicily. Part I

Sicily is famous for its beaches, many of which are among the best in Italy. In 2011, six Sicilian beaches were awarded the Blue Flag for the cleanliness of their waters. The rating was based on specific scientific standards, not subjective opinions. Here is this "magnificent six": Porto Paulo (Menfi), Pozzallo and Ispica (Ragusa), Fiumefreddo-Cottone (Catania), Spiaggia Bianca (Lipari) and Marina di Ragusa.

BlogoIaliano has compiled a select list of the best beaches in Sicily with reference to the nearest city or locality. It should be noted, however, that some of them may be located at some distance from these settlements.

San Vito Lo Capo Beach

San Vito Lo Capo beach is a diamond in the treasury of Sicilian nature. Better known as Cape St. Vitus, it is located west of Palermo, in the vicinity of Trapani. Fans of outdoor activities will find here everything you need: pleasure boats, diving equipment, windsurfing boards, etc.

The beaches of Sicily are equipped with everything necessary for outdoor activities.

Not far from the city of San Vito Lo Capo is the Zingaro Nature Reserve (Riserva naturale parco dello Zingaro) and the village of Scopello, where some scenes from the film "Ocean's Twelve" were shot. And at the end of September in San Vito Lo Capo traditionally hosts the gastronomic festival Cous Cous (Cous Cous Fest).

Lido Mazzaro Beach (Spiaggia Lido Mazzaro)

Lido Mazzaro is one of the best beaches in the Sicilian resort of Taormina. This beach, with its cafes and summer restaurants located along the entire coastline, was often visited at one time by the stars of the "Golden Age" of Hollywood. Today it has become more democratic, but continues to be a "hot spot" from April to October.

Pollara Beach (Spiaggia di Pollara) on Salina Island

Amazing and exciting place on the island of Salina - famous Pollara beach, celebrated by Michael Radford in his Oscar-winning film Postman. Small in size, but fabulously beautiful sandy Pollara beach with green-blue waters and high cliffs - the remains of the crater of an ancient volcano, overhanging the sea for thousands of years.

Sabbie Nere Beach (Spiaggia Sabbie Nere)

20 km from Sicily on the island of Vulcano (Vulcano) is located Spaggia Sabbie Nere - black sandy beach. The island is the top of an underwater volcano that last erupted in 1890. Another of its features is geothermal sulfur mud. Making his way from somewhere in the bowels of the volcano, not far from the coast, this hot spring flows into the sea, causing it to boil like a whirlpool. Finally, speaking of Vulcano, one cannot fail to mention the “Valley of the Monsters”, where on the black sand among rare vegetation stone blocks are scattered here and there, reminiscent of fantastic animals frozen in various poses.
